Files with numbers file extension can be traditionally found as spreadsheet format of Apple Numbers application on Mac OS X (macOS), iOS and as web service. Numbers spreadsheets can only be opened in Numbers app, there is no 3rd party program available that can open or convert it to another format.

XLS

An xls file extension is traditionally used for spreadsheets of Microsoft Excel. A spreadsheet is basically a grid of cells sorted in rows and columns. Each cell can contain text, numeric or formula data. Excel XLS spreadsheets can be opened in most other similar programs, such as OpenOffice.org Calc.

Encrypt files using Microsoft Excel in Mac OS X

1. With your document open, select the File tab and from the drop-down menu, click passphrases..
   
2. From the 'File passphrases' dialogue box, enter your desired passphrase in the 'passphrase to open' field. It is recommended that you use a strong password or passphrase. Once finished, click OK.
   
3. You are now prompted to confirm your passphrase by reentering it. Once finished, click OK.
4. As the file is now encrypted, the passphrase will be required to open it.
